Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. Since our Department was founded in 1970, its educational, clinical, and research activities have grown dramatically. Our residency program has a broad range of experiences and teaching in all of the subspecialties. The program has been continually approved by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since its inception, and offers ACGME-approved fellowships in pain management, cardiac anesthesia, critical care, and pediatric anesthesia, as well as a fellowship in neuroanesthesia.
The Department of Anesthesiology at UC provides services for over 20,000 anesthetics annually in 36 anesthetic sites, primarily at The University Hospital. University Hospital was named one of the Top 15 Teaching Hospitals in the U.S. by Solucient and is consistently ranked as one of "America 's Best Hospitals" by U.S. News and World Report. In addition, The University Hospital is home to one of the few nationally-certified major adult burn treatment centers in the nation; the region's best-equipped and busiest Level I Trauma Center, and active solid organ transplantation programs. The department also provides anesthesia services at the Cincinnati Shiners Hospital for Children, the University Pointe Surgical Hospital, and the West Chester Medical Center. Our interventional pain program sees patients both at University Hospital and at the department's free-standing Pain Management Center in West Chester, Ohio.
Residents acquire their pediatric anesthesia training at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. U.S.News & World Report has ranked Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center the third best children’s hospital in the United States in general pediatrics in the 2008 edition of its annual "America’s Best Children’s Hospitals" rankings. The Pediatric Anesthesia Department at Cincinnati Children's performs over 25,000 anesthetics and 5,000 pain consults each year. Children's performs all types of surgeries, including cardiac, neurological, craniofacial, transplantation, and major spine operations. Cincinnati Children's anesthesia faculty is internationally recognized in anesthesia for premature infants, pediatric cardiac surgery, difficult airway problems, and chronic pain conditions.
Our residency provides state-of-the-art facilities, cutting edge NIH-funded research, focused didactics, and a wide range of advanced training. The intimate size of our residency program, coupled with the wide variety and high complexity of cases at UC, provides a unique learning experience for residents, which can be matched by few programs.
We welcome inquiries from students, residents, fellows, and colleagues alike.
